So what ever happened to Faberge Jeans?
In the early 80's Faberge jeans were the hottest thing going. Girls and Guys alike. Worn so tight we would lie down on the bed with a coat hanger to get the zip up!
The Early stretchies as they were affectionately named. We a woven stretch so were 100% cotton, no Polyester no Elastane, no nasties or micro plastics back then. The woven Cotton only Stretch meant they were built to last. Cotton being a very long wearing fabric. Once its blended with other fibres it of course becomes softer and has more stretch but will not last like the 100% Cotton garments of the past.
The Faberge Company is owned by The Laidlaw Family ( Hard Yakka)- this Iconic 80's brand popularised the high rise Skinny. Early Faberge jeans were made in Australia and by the late 80's they were also being made offshore.
The vintage garments are now sought after with vintage lovers who want Iconic Australian. But beware the Vintage sizing can catch you out! As the marked size is about 3-4 sizes smaller to todays jeans. So a Vintage 10 will best suit a current day 6..... something to be mindful of, see out Fit Guide online if you need help with sizing.
Fabergé jeans were a popular iconic denim brand established in the late 70's and one of the leading Australian brand in the 80's. The brand was established by fashion agent Neville Davis, who was also a major supplier of other brands to The Jean Warehouse. Davis established the trading entity "Neville Davis Fashion Marketing Pty Ltd" in 1978.
Davis then went on to purchase The Jean Warehouse from Stephen Bisgrove in November 1987. Yakka's- David Laidlaw bought the label for Yakka, a Melbourne-based clothing manufacturing company. The Laidlaw family runs a group of clothing companies, including Yakka, maker of the family's flagship range of industrial overalls and boiler suits. The family held 15% of the Australian jeans market through its Lee and Faberge ranges, and it makes a range of men's trousers under the brand names Mr Stretch and Mr Comfort. David Laidlaw founded the company in 1922 and his youngest son, John Laidlaw, is managing director today. His daughter, Marlene, is a director. Yakka is based in the outer Melbourne suburb of Broadmeadows.
In 2012 he now defunct Faberge Label sold their patterns to new Aussie brand Rollas , they also use the same iconic packet stitching, although are sadly made offshore with blended denims.
